It’s been more than a century since the light bulb was invented and not much has actually changed.
When I was working at Tesla Motors and sitting near the windows, I saw a glaring inefficiency where the sun was streaming in through the windows and the lights were on at full power. As I looked for products that could make the lights respond similar to our phones and laptops, the only solutions that could do this were very expensive and complicated lighting control systems. This seemed silly so I founded Stack Lighting to change that.
Solving problems with technology has always been part of my life. As a kid, I built my own computers. By sixth grade, I employed three college students part time to build web pages for small businesses. Eventually, at Tesla, I saw first hand how the right technology and products can transform old industries and change the world.
Over the past year, we’ve been assembling a great team of hardware and software engineers from companies like Tesla, Intel, Google, Oracle, NASA, HP Labs and several others.
We’re fresh from the stage at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, where we introduced our first product. Alba is the world’s first responsive light bulb that can automatically adjust to natural light, find the right color temperature for the space and time and turn itself on or off depending on room occupancy. Alba will save you money and may even help your health and sleep.
Unlike “smart” bulbs that do little more than move the light control from a switch to a phone—often making usage more complicated—Alba’s embedded light and motion sensors do the work for you right from the bulb.
When you walk into a room, the bulbs sense how much natural light is there and how much light is needed. Throughout the day, Alba maintains the right color of light, from a cooler blue-white in the morning to a warmer yellow-white at night, to set the right mood and make you feel more in tune with your space.
If you wake at night to grab that midnight snack or use the bathroom, Alba will light a path for you instead of waking you up.
If you’re in business, including retail, you know how the right mood and light affects your employees and customers. Additionally, our pilot tests show energy savings of 60% to 80% with Alba compared to regular LED bulbs. And installation is simple: screw in the bulb, plug in the hub and go.
Over the next year, we’ll produce a variety of bulbs and fixtures for a wide variety of applications. In 2015, we’ll use our patent-pending sensor technologies to offer software solutions for commercial customers including beacon functionality and API driven, high resolution analytics.
Think about how awesome it would be if we could really make buildings responsive and know what we’ll want. We see Alba being integral in helping make this a reality through our distributed sensor network.
If changing the way we all experience light at home and at work is something you’re interested in, or you’d like to be one of the first people to experience Alba, come visit us at stacklighting.com and pre-order your lights today!
We’re excited to show you how better light can lead to a better life.
